PANDANGAN ISLAM TERHADAP TRADISI DAN KEMODENAN (Islamic View Of Heritage And Modernity)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
By and large, Muslims, including the intellectuals among them, are having problem in dealing with religious tradition. The modernists consider tradition as a burden which keeps the ummah from moving forward. From the other extreme viewpoint, the traditionalists regard tradition as sacred and cannot be changed. Some would argue that Muslims should adopt what is good and true throwing away what is regarded as bad and false without an adequate explanation. Therefore, this paper is an attempt to explicate the true place and value of tradition in Islam, considering the fact that the current problem of division and confusion has its root in the wrong conception of it. Moreover, this paper criticizes the liberal approach toward tradition which can destroy the religious authority in Islam. In addition it also discusses what is appropriate attitude Muslims should have toward Western modernity, and criticizes the secular and modernits’ tendency in accepting western modernity in a priori manner. It is an attempt to give a clear perspective on Western modernity, development, progress based on the worldview of Islam.
