Abstract

Abstract: Pantun is one of the forms of language arts in the Malay language subject. However, primary school teachers place less emphasis on teaching aesthetic poetry. Furthermore, aesthetics is a feature of pantun beauty that teachers must instill in their students. As a result, this is a qualitative study aimed at identifying the problems that teachers confront when teaching aesthetics of pantun in primary schools. This study involved eight participants: four Malay language teachers and four Malay language lecturers from the Teacher Education Institute. Purposive sampling was used for selecting participants with at least five years of expertise in teaching pantun. This data was gathered through semi-structured interviews and analysed thematically. Five main themes were obtained based on the findings of the study which were (1) teacher's perception (2) lack of interest in the pantun, (3) weakness of content knowledge (4) complacent attitude and (5) weakness of pedagogical practice. The impact of this study indicates that the issues of teaching pantun that teachers confront must be addressed promptly by suggested solutions such as developing teaching pantun guidelines, teaching pantun materials, teaching models and modules that teachers can use while teaching pantun in primary schools.
