Dramatisim ISIS Network and Framing Terrorism: An Analysis Indonesian News Coverage of Terrorism News
Abstract
Terrorism is a global threat and not just a phenomenon. As a red zone of terrorism, terrorists in Indonesia have always been exclusively associated with ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) affiliates. Seeing the focus of terrorism coverage in Indonesia related to the dramatization of the ISIS group is an interesting contribution related to the benefits of political economy in the media that is constructed differently in two mainstream media in Indonesia such as online media portals kompas.com and CNN Indonesia. In addition, there are differences in the comparative approach of the two media in reporting the arrest of terrorists suspected of being linked to the ISIS network. This study aims to answer the question, how is the dramatization of the ISIS network and the framing of terrorism news in Indonesia on Kompas.com and CNN Indonesia media? This research uses qualitative methods with Robert M. Entman's Framing Analysis approach, which includes problem definition, cause diagnosis, moral judgment, and treatment recommendations. The results show that by using big names in the ISIS network, dramatic framing can be achieved. Like Kompas.com, they focus on labelling the ISIS network as an extremist armed group and consider it a potential threat. This is different from CNN Indonesia which focuses more on narrative text when developing news about the government's position and steps to be taken to reduce the threat of terrorism in Indonesia.
Keywords: Indonesia, ISIS, media framing, terrorism, dramatization.
