Author Guidelines

 Instructions for authors

The journal has free online open access and no charges are levied for publication of manuscripts. Two issues are published in a year.

The journal welcomes all articles confining human and animal studies from all parts of the world in the field of surgery and the allied surgical disciplines like urosurgery, gastro-hepatobiliary surgery, colorectal surgery, cardiothoracic, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, thyroid and breast surgery, endocrine surgery, dermatologic surgery, ophthalmology surgery, otorhinolaryngology surgery, obstetrics and  gynaecological surgery, anaesthesiology, orthopaedic surgery, paediatric surgery, clinical anatomy, radiology, plastic surgery, musculoskeletal surgery etc. Manuscripts pertaining to surgical aspect in basic sciences discipline are also welcome.

Manuscripts submitted to the journal will be processed for review with the understanding that it has not been published or sent elsewhere. The corresponding author should hold the responsibility to correspond with the editor regarding all matters related to the submitted manuscript. All authors must be aware of the submission. The Editorial board reserves the right to welcome or decline any such article according to its individual merit and it cannot be challenged.

All manuscripts should be submitted online. Authors are requested to address their queries to jsa@ukm.edu.my. 

 

Categories of articles that can be submitted

 

  1. Editorial- The Editorial board may solicit editorials from renowned surgeons and this section will focuss on important topics which may be immensely beneficial to all readers.
  2. Review articles- To be received by invitation only. It should have maximum of 8000 words with a maximum of 80 references.
  3. Original articles- Confined to research either in basic or clinical science. It should have maximum of 5000 words with a maximum of 30 references. A maximum of FOUR figures/illustrations and FOUR tables may be allowed for such articles
  4. Case reports/correspondence- Any interesting case study highlighting new facts or diagnostic challenge may be submitted. It should have maximum of 1500 words with a maximum of 15 references. A maximum of FOUR figures, TWO tables may be allowed
  5. Letter to the Editor- Should discuss any interesting fact or comment upon a previously published article. Maximum of ONE figure with no tables are allowed.
  6. Obituary- Depends at the discretion of the Editorial board.
  7. Clinical quiz of the month- Short cases with interesting facts will be published for readers to think and answer
  8. Announcements- the Editorial board may post such announcement from time to time,, which may be beneficial to any reader.
 

Review process

The Editor will receive all articles that strictly comply to the instructions and pertain to the field of Surgery. Initial screening of the manuscript is done and the manuscript is sent to expert reviewer related to the field. Once the manuscript is sent to reviewers, a manuscript number is assigned for future correspondence. The review process may be completed within two (2) months. The Editor reserves the right to reject/return any article that does not meet the requirements.

If the article is returned to authors for revision, they may be allowed a maximum period of two (2) weeks to respond. Failure to do such will result in automatic rejection. On acceptance, the proof copy will be sent to authors and they have to respond within a time period of 48 hours.

 

Manuscript preparation

All manuscripts which do not comply to the instructions will be returned to the authors immediately. No further queries would be entertained.

Each manuscript should be typed in compatible MS Word file. The text should be written in Times New Roman, in 12 font size. The manuscript should have 1 inch margin both on the left and right sides. All text should be DOUBLE spaced and justified alignment with each section of abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion and reference in separate page. Text should be typed only on ONE side of the page.

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a cover letter (either submitted at the very beginning or upon acceptance). No manuscript would be published without a cover letter.

 

Ethical considerations/ consent

If human subjects are involved in the study, the authors are requested to mention the ethical approval. The authors should confirm to the guidelines provided by the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals(CPCSEA) and World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki on Ethical Principles for Medical Research for experimental animals and human studies, respectively).

While reporting clinical cases, consent is required. The editorial board reserves the right to ask for the evidence of consent.

 

Plagiarism

The journal views all plagiarised manuscripts as serious offence. Authors are advised to screen the text for any similarity in text before submission of any manuscripts. The editorial team rserves the right to reject any manuscript with plagiarism.

This is to declare that all authors have contributed to the study. No part of the manuscript has been sent for consideration elsewhere or published in any International or National journal. The authors clearly certify that there is no aspect of plagiarism. All the conflicts of interest have been clearly defined and the source of grant disclosed. Due ethical permission/consent has been obtained for carrying out the study. In case of any dispute, the authors will be held fully responsible for the statement disclosed in the cover letter. The authors are also aware of the copyright rules and also declare that they will not reproduce any published text without due permission from the journal

Title page

Each article should have a title page which should have :- Type of article mentioned at the top.
Title of the article in block capital letters. Full names of authors.
Author’s affiliations with complete postal address. Short running title within 40 words.
Corresponding author’s complete postal address with zip code, telephone number, fax and e-mail address.
Total word count should be mentioned on the title page

 

Abstract

Abstract should start in a new page. All articles except letter to Editor should have an abstract within 300 words. The abstract should be unstructured with no subheadings. No references are permitted in the abstract.

Keywords: Please include at least FIVE keywords from MeSH database.

Begin the abstract in a new page. Text should be written in paragraphs.

 

Text

Ethical approval should be clearly mentioned. All subheadings should be in running letters (sentence case). Please do not make it in BOLD or CAPITAL letters. No figures or tables are allowed in this section.


Figures and illustrations

All figures and tables should be clearly typed and saved in separate files. Please do not insert photographs and tables in the manuscript text. The photographs should be in 300 dpi resolution. Please save the illustrations/figures in JPEG format (height 7” and width 9.33”). All figures, which are poor in quality and saved in other formats, will not be accepted. Figure legends may be typed at the end of references in the manuscript text.

 

References

Cite the reference in the text with numerical in brackets. The numerical numbers increases while the text proceeds, so in other words the numerical should be in increasing order. In the reference section, cite the complete reference with numbers as it appears in the text. No need to arrange alphabetically.


You should mention names of all authors maximum up to six. If it has more than six authors, it should have the names of the first three authors followed by et al.

Please use the standard abbreviation for journals as depicted in Pubmed/ Medline.

Thesis/conference proceedings

No thesis and conference proceedings, which do not have url/website address, are allowed as references. For citing website, please mention the last date accessed.

 

Legal

The journal reserves its copyright rules for all published articles. All legal disputes are related to the jurisdiction of the journal at the local level


 

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format. Please save the illustrations/figures in JPEG format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is DOUBLE-spaced; uses a 12-point font in Times New Roman or in Arial; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
  7. Two (2) recommended reviewers has been attached for the manuscript
  8. Confirm that you have prepared a complete text minus the title page, acknowledgments, and any running headers with author names, to allow anonymized review, and have not compromised your anonymity in any Supporting Information files or Additional Files for Review uploaded
