Politik Pilihan Raya: Penolakan Terhadap UMNO di Kelantan dalam Pilihan Raya Umum 2013 (Electoral Politics: Kelantan’s Rejection of UMNO In The 2013 General Election)

Abstract


In the 2013 Malaysian General Election (GE 13), the Barisan Nasional (BN) and the United Malay National Organisation (UMNO) coalition failed to win a majority in the state of Kelantan due to their continued rejection by the people of Kelantan. The Kelantanese gave a direct mandate to Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) for the 6th term when PAS captured a two third majority of the seats: PAS won 32 seats, UMNO 12 seats, and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) 1 seat. Whathas been unique in every election in Kelantan, is the clash between the two Malay political parties (UMNO/BN and PAS), unusual in Malaysia.. UMNO’s primary Kelantanese support base tends to be rural, whilst urban areas and small towns tend to vote against. The main factors contributing to UMNO’s continued rejection are the charismatic leadership of PAS’ Tok Guru Nik Aziz, and the failure of UNMO’s Red Wave/Gelombang Merah movement in Kelantan. The lively two-party competition is focused on partisan spirit in an area where the majority are Malay Muslims.. Thus, rising prices, water and land issues affect the overall outcome of Kelantanese elections less than partisan spirit.. This article argues that, based on the results of the 2013 election,, people’s desire to change the state of Kelantan is important, but at the same time most people want to maintain the traditional leadership of their ulama..
