Sinkretisme dalam Amalan Perubatan Tradisional Masyarakat Melayu Sarawak: Penilaian dari Perspektif Islam
Abstract

ABSTRACT: The clash between cultures and religious beliefs has spun into a complex yet intriguing hybrid, which inevitably poses abstruseness and potential misperceptions. Syncretism that is apparent in the chants recited in traditional healing manifest intertwining Islamic and non-Islamic elements. Rising awareness about the teachings of Islam among Malay Muslim communities, coupled with governmental efforts, have inspired this study to re-examine the practices of traditional Malay healing and ensure that such practices are not incongruent with Islamic teachings that may lead to blasphemy. This study is focused on several healing procedures which include recitations of chants or ‘doa’ in the Sarawak Malay traditional healing which are still practised today. Syncretism is found to be prominent in these practices and profanity to the faith and teachings of Islam point to the rejection and abandonment of such practices.
Key words: syncretism, traditional healing practices, Sarawak Malay, Islam, faith, chants, shaman
