Abstract

ABSTRACT: The features of Malay muamalat lexical discourse consisting of uncommon Malay, Arabic and English are not coincidentally formed, but rather as a result of the influence from muamalat social practice. This is due to the relationship between social practice and discourse is considered as reciprocal. Therefore, using the approach of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this study aims to dissolve the dialectical relationship between muamalat social practice and lexical features of Islamic banking discourse. This study also proves that on the one hand social practice influences the formation of discourse and on the other hand discourse strengthens social practice. Finally, this study clarifies that, the existence of complicated lexical features in Malay Islamic banking discourse supports the needs of muamalat social practice, especially in the context of Malaysia where Islamic banking spreads within the framework of conventional banking.
