Mengenal Pasti Perwatakan Ekstremis Melalui Disiplin Fiqh Taayush
Abstract
Detecting Extremist Characteristics through the Discipline of Fiqh Ta’ayush (Islamic Jurisprudence of Co-existence)
Normal human character can usually be observed from several aspects including disposition, thought, belief, speech and actions. However, the character of an extremist is difficult to identify and can only be known after a person is detained as an extremist offender. Therefore, the presence of this group often creates surprises in society. This situation occurs due to our failure to identify the extremist elements present in the individual involved even though the characteristics are often stated by the authorities. Hence, this article discusses extremism with focus on the process of identifying extremist characteristics through the discipline of fiqh al-ta’ayush, a discipline of knowledge that discusses practical laws compiled from authentic sources of Islam relating to human relations. This discipline was formed through a study that used several methods including content analysis, document analysis and semi-structured interviews. The results of the study show that fiqh al-ta’ayush, when correctly compiled in a structured form, can become a discipline that allows extremist characteristics of an individual to be easily identified. Early detection of extremism through fiqh al-ta’ayush is important as a first step in eradication to prevent this ideology and movement from continuing to spread or, at least to avoid ourselves, our family members and society as a whole from being influenced by such an ideology. Prevention is also important to clean up the image of Islamic society that is often tarnished and considered as fundamentalist, extremist, radical, and violent giving rise to Islamophobia in international society.
