Author Guidelines

Submission of articles implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture or academic thesis), or it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out, and if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent from the publisher. International Journal of West Asian Studies (IJWAS) also accept manuscripts in Malay (Bahasa Melayu) and Arabic language. However, kindly take note that the title and abstract must be prepared in both Malay/Arabic and English languages.


Scope

International Journal of West Asian Studies is published as an online journal (e-journal), as well as printed copy, focusing on the West Asian region pertaining to politics, economy, science and technology, culture, education, etc. In the journal’s context, West Asia means the region generally known as the Middle East, Arab speaking countries of north Africa, part of central Asia and part of the Indian sub-continent.

 

Frequency of Publication

The journal is published once a year in November, by the Research Centre for Arabic Language and Islamic Civilization, Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Articles, views, book reviews, review articles and short reports on West Asia in particular, and relations of West Asia with Malaysia and ASEAN, in general are welcomed.

 

Submissions

The journal publishes articles in the Malay, English and Arabic languages. Only original manuscripts, not published elsewhere, or under consideration by any other journals, need to be submitted for consideration for publication.


Acknowledgement

Place any acknowledgement here. For example, This work was supported by the Research Fund provided by xxxxxxxxxx.Avoid identifying any of the authors prior to the review

i) Authors' Contributions

All authors should contribute significantly to the article. For research articles with several authors, a short paragraph specifying their individual contributions must be provided. The following statements should be used “Conceptualization, X.X. and Y.Y.; methodology, X.X.; software, X.X.; validation, X.X., Y.Y. and Z.Z.; formal analysis, X.X.; investigation, X.X.; resources, X.X.; data curation, X.X.; writing—original draft preparation, X.X.; writing—review and editing, X.X.; visualization, X.X.; supervision, X.X.; project administration, X.X.; funding acquisition, Y.Y. All authors have read and agreed to the published version of the manuscript.”, please turn to the CRediT taxonomy for the term explanation. Authorship must be limited to those who have contributed substantially to the work reported.

ii) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Generated Text Declaration

Authors must disclose the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by adding a statement at the end of their manuscript in the core manuscript file, before the References list. The statement should be placed in a new section entitled ‘Declaration of Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process’. Statement: During the preparation of this work the author(s) used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE] in order to [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication. This declaration does not apply to the use of basic tools for checking grammar, spelling, references etc. If there is nothing to disclose, there is no need to add a statement. Example: This article has utilized artificial intelligence (AI) technology, specifically ChatGPT by OpenAI, as a support tool in drafting and content review. All facts have been re-verified by the author to ensure accuracy and contextual relevance.


References

All references cited in the text must appear in the Reference list. We do not accept Bibliography. Footnotes and endnotes are not allowed.
References should be arranged in alphabetical order according to the American Psychological Association (APA) Manual of Style. All references must be romanized. Sources without authors are arranged alphabetically by title within the same list.

Arabic References: All references should be transliterated and arranged in alphabetical order. And should be Romanized. The word ‘al’ of the author’s surname is not regarded as the first letter. Thus the author, al-Qaradhawi should be placed under alphabet Q category.

 

Copyright and Originality of Article

It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that his or her submitted work does not infringe any existing copyright. Furthermore, the author indemnifies the editors and publisher against any breach of such a warranty. Authors should obtain permission to reproduce or adapt copyrighted materials and provide evidence of approval upon submitting the final version of a manuscript. Submission of manuscript to the journal for consideration of publication signifies that the author or authors jointly agree that the article to be published is original in nature. Submission of an article implies that it has not been simultaneously submitted or previously published elsewhere. Contributors will be asked to assign their copyright, on certain conditions, to the Institute of West Asian Studies, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

 

Non-Conformity to Guideline

The editor may return manuscripts that do not conform to the guideline.

 

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
