Strengthening van operators as public transport in rural area: A case study in Hulu Terengganu

Abstract

In rural areas, public transport is an essential requirement for the people, especially to those who do not own a private vehicle. However, after almost 60 years of independence, public transportation services in rural areas are still unsatisfactory. The authorities also seem to be leaving the running of public transportation services in this area to individual entrepreneurs. Therefore, this paper attempts to provide some recommendations to improve the service of public transport in rural areas.  The study was conducted in Hulu Terengganu, one of the districts in the Terengganu state. A total of 146 respondents of public transport users in rural areas of Hulu Terengganu are involved in this research. Consumer perceptions regarding the quality of public transport services are assessed in several elements which include service operations, efficiency, maneuverability, accessibility, comfort, reliability, safety, cost and terminal facilities. A number of recommendations to strengthen the public transportation services are suggested to provide an added value to the image of public transportation in rural areas.
