Abstract

Depression among students in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) has become an increasing concern due to academic demands, social transitions, and lifestyle adjustments. This study aims to examine the relationship between depression, spiritual intelligence, and religious coping strategies, as well as gender differences across these variables among HEI students. A quantitative survey design was employed, involving 381 respondents from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Data were collected using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (SISRI-24), and Brief RCOPE-14, and analysed using SPSS version 29 through descriptive and inferential statistics, including independent samples t-tests, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis. The findings revealed that students reported moderate levels of depression, while spiritual intelligence and religious coping were at high levels. No significant gender differences were found across all variables. Correlation analysis indicated weak but significant relationships between depression, spiritual intelligence, and religious coping. Regression results further demonstrated that spiritual intelligence and religious coping significantly predicted depression levels, with implications for suicidal ideation among students. From a clinical perspective, these findings highlight the importance of psychospiritual-based interventions as potential support and preventive strategies in reducing depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation among HEI students.
