Abstract

The objective of this article is to study the factors, which influenced the behaviour of private savings in Malaysia. The latest time series econometric technique, that is ARDL approach proposed by Pesaran and Shin (1996) will be applied in this study. The result of the study indicates the existence of a long run relationship or cointegration between private saving and the selected independent variables. In the long run, the growth of per capita income, age dependency ratio, financial market development, and the terms of trade are statistically significant in influencing private savings behaviour. Meanwhile, the variables of real interest rates and inflation is not significant in terms of influencing private savings.
