TAN SIEW BEE

Abstract

This article explains the importance of rattan collecting, which is a commercial economic activity engaged by the Orang Siwang (Chewong) of Lembah Krau, Pahang. Rattan collecting had been conducted by the group since the colonial times. The increase in international demand for rattan had led to an increase in activity. Both the male and female members of the group are engaged in rattan collecting which forms the main source of income. To market the rattan they have to depend on the middlemen who would always try to exploit them so as to gain more profit. The income from the sale is used to buy both the essential and luxury goods. Rattan collecting also provide opportunities for Orang Siwang to interact with the outside world.
