method of interpretation is rigid and literal. It does not meet the primary purpose of the revealation of the Quran, that is
to give guidance to mankind. Traditional method is also not appropriate to interpret the Quran according to the social
situation of Muslims today. To achieve this goal, the study examines the position of the Quran according to Abu Zayd,
method of exegesis and application of the theory of interpretation according to him. This study is a library research by
applying document analysis method. His view on the concept of interpreting the verses of the Quran is similar to the
method which has been applied by Western scholars in Biblical interpretation system.
