A COMPREHENSIVE CHECKLIST OF STAG BEETLES (COLEOPTERA: LUCANIDAE) FROM INDIA

Abstract


Superfamily Scarabaeoidea is a diverse, cosmopolitan group of beetles and is represented by 41,578 species from the World. Lucanidae is the most primitive family of superfamily Scarabaeoidea and are commonly known as stag beetles because of their large and conspicuous mandibles. The lucanids are represented by 1811 species from the world of which maximum diversity is documented from the Southeast Asia. Many countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar and Laos are well documented, however, there is a dearth of checklist on Lucanids from India. To understand the biodiversity of a region, proper cataloguing of its flora and fauna is required. Therefore, an effort has been made to provide an updated checklist of family Lucanidae from India.
