ABUNDANCE AND COMPOSITION OF INSECTS IN COASTAL AND INLAND FORESTS OF REDANG ISLAND, TERENGGANU, MALAYSIA

Abstract


Redang Island in Terengganu, Malaysia is one of the popular islands in Malaysia. However, the development of the tourism industry in Pulau Redang which is growing needs to be regulated from time to time to ensure that the balance of fauna is always preserved. Thus, a study was conducted in Redang Island with the aim to determine the abundance and composition of insects in the coastal and inland forests of the island using Malaise traps, yellow pan traps, and pitfall traps. The traps were left for seven days, and insect samples collected were brought to the laboratory for sorting, enumeration and identification process. A total of 972 individuals from 14 orders of insects were successfully sampled at Redang Island forests. Hymenoptera was the most abundant order recorded with a value of 48.36% (470 individuals) followed by Diptera at a value of 32.10% (312 individuals) and Lepidoptera at a value of 4.32% (42 individuals). Whilst, the Blattodea was the least abundant order recorded at 0.21% (2 individuals). The total abundance of insects sampled in the inland forest was relatively higher (501 individuals) compared to the coastal forest (471 individuals). However, there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the abundance of insects between both forests of Redang Island. The results of this study are hoped to be uaseful for as basis for further studies on the inventory of insect species in Pulau Redang.
