Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital media has intensified concerns regarding speculative reporting, public judgement and trial-by-media dynamics in contemporary communication environments. Social media platforms facilitate public participation and information sharing but may also accelerate the circulation of unverified claims and premature public judgements before official investigations are completed. This study examines media coverage of the Zara Qairina case, involving the death of a 13-year-old Malaysian student in July 2025 amid allegations of bullying, an ongoing investigation and widespread demands for accountability. The case provides a context for examining tensions between verification, public speculation and media responsibility in the digital age. Using qualitative content analysis, the study analysed 50 online news articles published by mainstream Malaysian news organisations between 18 and 31 July 2025. The analysis identified four dominant themes: Verification-Oriented Investigation Reporting (60%), Institutional Response and Accountability (18%), Public Judgement and Social Media Speculation (12%) and Emotional Framing and Family Grief (10%). The results indicate that mainstream news coverage was predominantly verification-oriented, emphasising police investigations, witness statements and official updates. However, a smaller proportion of reports reflected public speculation, reputation-related controversies and emotionally framed narratives associated with broader trial-by-media tendencies. Drawing upon Social Responsibility Theory and the Islamic ethical principle of tabayyun, the study argues that responsible communication requires verification, communicative restraint and accountability in both professional journalism and participatory digital environments. The study contributes to contemporary discussions on media ethics by demonstrating how trial-by-media dynamics emerge through the interaction of journalism, social media participation and digital information ecosystems.
