Ketaksamaan Sistem Padi Kunca dalam Kalangan Kaum Tani Melayu di Kedah Tahun 1910-1967 (Padi Kunca System Inequality among Malay Peasant in Kedah in 1910-1967)
Abstract
Peasants in the state of Kedah Darul Aman have debt issues closely related to their socio-economic situation. For example, the relationships between the peasants and Chetty that lend them money with land grant collateral. This article aims to assess the debt problem among peasants in Muda, Kedah around 1900 to 1967. It centers on the mortgaging issue and the exchange of paddy land ownership to Chetty and creditors. As a result, the peasants had to rent their land because of their indebtedness. The historical research methodology was used in this study. The researchers collected government official documents, newspapers and conducted interviews to better understand the debt problem of peasants in Kedah, it includes SUK 1957, SUK 3421 and SUK 2829. The study's findings show that the peasants' debt problem was caused by their attitude, which easy to accept loans offered by the Chetty.
