Abstract

ACOUSTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ARABIC FARINGEALISATION SOUNDS’ BY MALAY NATIVE SPEAKER: STUDY ON THE BASIS OF SEX DIFFERENCES

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to accentuate the acoustic characteristics of Arabic pharyngealised sound produced by native speakers of Malay male and female who learn Arabic as a second language. In particular, this study aims to describe aspects of voice quality of the production of relevant sex differences-based sound. This research makes use of varying methods including literature studies, fieldwork and laboratory methods. PRAAT software is used forspectrographic analysis. Acousticparameter submitted by the researcher includesVoice OnsetTime and Frication Duration in order to detain theacoustic difference of sounds produced by the male and female speaker. Linguistic data consists of plosiveand fricative sound occurredin the initial and medial position of Malay and Arabic words. The study shows that there is no significant difference in the characteristics of the acoustic sound of the pharyngealise Arabic produced by native speakers of Malay based on sex. Therefore, sex differences have no effect in the mastery Arabic in particular thepharyngealised Arabic sounds. The findings are expected to help other researchers to increased acoustic phonetic knowledge as well as to enrichliterature knowledge in different dimensions.

Keywords:  sex differences; Arabic pharyngealised sound; Acoustic Phonetic;  spectrographic analysis; voice quality.
