Konstruksi Masyarakat Peribumi dalam Sejarah Alam Melayu Penggal I: Analisis Historiografi Awal Malaysia (The Construction of Indigenous Society in Sejarah Alam Melayu Volume 1: An Analysis of Early Malaysian Historiography)
Abstract

ABSTRACT
The production of modern historical text in Malaya emerged around the mid-1920s, coinciding with the pivotal role of Sultan Idris Training College (SITC) as a catalyst in producing welltrained Malay teachers. In this context, the Sejarah Alam Melayu by Abdul Hadi emerged as one of the pioneering works by a local author. Despite its significance, most previous studies have focused on technical and structural analysis, while the portrayal and narrative of indigenous communities in these works have received insufficient attention. Therefore, this study aims to examine in depth the portrayal of indigenous peoples in the Sejarah Alam Melayu through a comparative analysis with other works produced during the same period. Employing a qualitative historical approach, this study focuses on primary sources and applies textual analysis to trace changes in theme, style and perspective of indigenous narrative within the context of local historiography. The main findings indicate that the Sejarah Alam Melayu brought about significant changes in the depiction of indigenous peoples. This work succeeds in highlighting local voices and perspectives with a Nusantara wide inclusivity and vision, contrasting sharply with the colonial narratives that dominated the period. This study not only enriches the corpus of Malaysian historiography but also opens new avenues for further indepth research on the Sejarah Alam Melayu series and its invaluable contribution to the formation of early national historical consciousness.
