Local Wisdom of the Langkawi Muslim Community in Tourism Helps the Preservation of Community Development

The Langkawi Malay community inherited local wisdom in tourism activities since Pulau Langkawi was declared a Duty Free Island in 1984. This study was written to identify the form of local wisdom in tourism that can help preserve the development of the Muslim community and identify the attitude of the Langkawi Malay community towards the beliefs and practices within tourism. The data were obtained through field research using interview and observation methods. The data were analyzed descriptively based on a qualitative perspective. Local wisdom can be seen in three phases in tourism, namely the phase before, during and after the island tourism declaration. The findings show that beliefs and practices in tourism have links with the development of Islamic society. Among the practices are the understanding of tourism intentions, activities, benefits, impacts, contributions and activities as well as tourism-related occupations. There are also three groups of informal attitude towards tourism beliefs and practices. This study can contribute to the understanding of local wisdom in tourism that helps preserve the development of the Muslim community and promotes the uniqueness of a society, especially in the field of tourism.
