[ms] Surabaya Intellectual Muslims’ Reaction towards the Syrian Orthodox Christian Movement in Indonesia

Abstract


The Orthodox Syrian movement in Indonesia is a phenomenon of Christianization. The approach of this missionary is a challenge towards the Indonesian Muslim. This movement is initiated by the Institute for Syriac Christian Studies located at Surabaya, Indonesia. The Indonesian Muslims have responsed towards the Christian Orthodox movement via writings and discourses. This article will discuss the approaches, the main issues which are argued by Muslim intellectuals and the implication towards the relationship between Muslims and Christians in Indonesia. In analysing this phenomenon, the writer use the content analysis approach which is largely based on Indonesian Muslim intellectuals’ writings in books, newspaper and magazines. This article has concluded that the Indonesian Muslim intellectuals must have a knowledge on Christian Orthodox Syrian and to face a Christianinization movement in Indonesia which is led by the Christian Orthodox Syrian Movement.
