Abstract

This article addresses the idea of history being interpreted in the framework of historiography by certain historian. Its focus is to present the conceptual idea of history and the technique of how the historian adopts and synchronizes the idea of history in historiographical writing framework. This discussion employs document and textual analysis method. Document analysis functions in building the idea of history as defined by Ibn Khaldun and Collingwood in Muqaddimah and The Idea of History. Meanwhile, textual analysis specifically refers to the work al-Kamil fi al-Tarikh of Ibn al- Athir as a sample to apply the technique of interpreting the idea of history in Islamic historiography. This discussion finds that there exists a concrete definition proposed by historians such as Ibn Khaldun and Collingwood to build a general conceptual idea of history and develop it into interpretation technique that explains how the idea of history is understood in the context of historical text or work.
