Editorial Policies

Focus and Scope

JSKM will publish original articles in Malay and English covering the entire fields of medical and health sciences such as audiology, biochemistry, clinical psychology, dentistry, dietetics, medical imaging, medical radiation, radiotherapy, nutrition, forensic sciences, optometry, pharmacology, pharmacy, physiology, physiotherapy, public health, speech therapy and sports science. It will also cover about the biology of an animal related to human health, with an emphasis given to natural biology and systematic.

Peer Review Process

REVIEW PROCESS

The manuscripts are sent to two reviewers and the review comments are solicited within a period of 3-4 weeks. The authors are conveyed about the decision on the manuscript and if there is a chance of resubmission with corrections, the authors are being given a maximum time period of one month. Failure to comply with reviewers comments may result in rejection.

 

Publication Frequency

Starting from January 2015, this journal will publish its issues in January and July.

 

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Our journal offers an open access articles, which is under the Creative Common license type : Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA)

Electronic submission and processing of manuscripts is possible from the page of JSKM. An electronic version of the journal has recently become available free of charge on-line in PDF format at http://ejournal.ukm.my/jskm/. JSKM is consecutively placing PDFs of earlier issues on its page. They can be downloaded for free. At present, articles published from July 2004 and onward are available.

 

Publication Code of Ethics: For Authors, Reviewers and Editors

This is the statement of ethics for Jurnal Sains Kesihatan Malaysia (JSKM) (Malaysian Journal of Health Sciences) published by Penerbit Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM Press). This statement was adapted from the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and covers code of ethics for chief editor, editorial board members, reviewers and authors. The journal publication code of ethics has been designed to safeguard the integrity of the journal and to ascertain that all published materials are of the highest scientific and ethical standard. Authors, editors and reviewers can use these guidelines in their tasks and duties. Any ethical issue and question, which concerns JSKM, can be addressed to the Editor-in-Chief. This code of ethics applies to manuscripts submitted to the journal. The editorial board of JSKM revises this code of ethics from time to time. 


1.0 CODE OF ETHICS FOR AUTHORS

1.1 Authors are expected to submit new and original works.

1.2 Authors must not reproduce works that have been previously published in other journals.

1.3 Any articles that are being reviewed or considered by the journal must not be submitted to other journals simultaneously.

1.4 Authors would only be allowed to publish their work elsewhere when decision not to publish their works are formally rejected or request of withdrawing their works from the journal have been officially accepted.

1.5 Authors must inform the Chief Editor or the publisher of any inaccuracy of data in their published works so that correction or retraction of article could be made.

1.6 Acknowledgement of others works must be clearly and accurately made/cited.

1.7 All authors should made significant contributions and should be held equally accountable for any shortcomings in their works.

1.8 Authors may write to the Editor-in-Chief requesting for the withdrawal of a manuscript that has been submitted to JSKM. However, such withdrawal is usually permitted within two weeks from the date of initial submission to JSKM. The reason for the withdrawal is required in writing.

1.9 Authors should be prompt with their manuscript revisions. If an author cannot meet the deadline given to complete the revision, he/she should inform the Editor-in-Chief to request for an extension.


2.0 CODE OF ETHICS FOR REVIEWERS

2.1 Disclose any competing interest before agreeing to review a submission.

2.2 Reviewers have the right to refuse reviewing any submission due to any conflict of interest or inadequate knowledge.

2.3 Submissions are to be reviewed objectively, fairly and professionally.

2.4 Comment on ethical question and any occurred misconduct while reviewing a submission.

2.5 Ensure originality of a submission and be alert of any plagiarism and redundant publication.

2.6 Reviewers must not discuss the content of the submission without permission.

2.7 Reviewing process should be prompt. Request for time extension in reviewing the submission must be agreed by the Chief Editor.


3.0 CODE OF ETHICS FOR EDITORIAL BOARD MEMBERS

3.1 Editorial board members are expected to actively contribute to the development and the greater good of the journal.

3.2 Editorial board members must act as ambassadors for the journal.

3.3 Editorial board members are expected to continuously support and promote the journal.

3.4 Review any submitted works assigned to them.


4.0 CODE OF ETHICS FOR CHIEF EDITOR

4.1 Manuscripts/ submissions are expected to be evaluated fairly and solely on their intellectual merit.

4.2 Must not disclose any confidential information regarding a submission to anyone other than the people involved in the publishing process.

4.3 Chief Editor has the responsibility to decide which and when article are to be published.

4.4 Actively seek the views of board members, reviewers and authors on how to improve/ increase the image and visibility of the journal.

4.5 Give clear instruction to potential contributors on the submission process and what to be expected of the authors.

4.6 Ensure appropriate reviewers are selected/ identified for a reviewing process.


5.0 PLAGIARISM

Manuscript submitted to JSKM shall not contain any form of plagiarism including self-plagiarism. The manuscript shall not contain any materials that are falsified and fabricated. The authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works and if the authors have used the work/or words of others, that this has been appropriately cited.

Plagiarism can be in the form of claiming others' paper as author's own paper usng or paraphrasing substantial parts of others' paper without proper credit. Claiming results from research other than author's own is also a form of plagiarism.

Authors should submit only original work that is not plagiarized, and has not been published or being considered elsewhere.  Appropriate softwares may be used by the editorial office to check for similarities of submitted manuscripts with existing literature. Inclusion of fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements are unacceptable. Authors whose manuscripts were found to have been plagiarized from other authors, whether published or unpublished will result in plagiarism sanctions.


6.0 CITATION

Work and/or words from other publications must be appropriately cited or quoted. Submitted manuscripts should not contain citations whose primary purpose is to increase the number of citations of a particular author, or to articles published in a particular journal.  Such practices will incur citation manipulation sanctions.


7.0 REPORTING

Authors should state their results clearly, honestly, and without fabrication, falsification or inappropriate data manipulation. The methods used in the work should be clearly and unambiguously described so that the findings can be repeated and confirmed by other researchers.


8.0 CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

A statement on conflict of interest must be included in the manuscript if authors receive any support that might be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.


9.0 AUTHORSHIP AND COLLABORTION

Name of authors listed in a paper should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the report. Only those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. Others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the work must be acknowledged or listed as contributors. It is the duty of the corresponding author to ensure that all appropriate co-authors and no inappropriate co-authors are included on the paper.  All co-authors must approve the final version of the paper and agree to the version of the paper before submission.


10.0 MULTIPLE OR REDUNDANT

10.1 Authors should not publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research output in more than one journal or primary publication. A similar manuscript should not be submitted to more than one journal concurrently as this constitutes as unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.

10.2 JSKM does not accept any submission of manuscript that has been published in full in a conference proceedings. This is because novelty is an important criterion for articles published in JSKM. The Editor-in-Chief may consider unpublished work that has been presented in part in any forum, particularly if the circulation of the proceedings is limited. Authors must clarify during submission the significant material that was added in the manuscript that wa not included in the proceedings. The proceedings must be properly cited in the submitted manuscript.

11.0 SANCTIONS

In the event that there are documented violations of any of the above mentioned policies, the following sanctions will be applied:

11.1 Outright rejection of the manuscript.

11.2 Outright rejection of every other manuscript submitted to any journal published by Penerbit UKM by any of the authors of the submitted manuscript.

11.3 Prohibition against all of the authors for any new submissions to any journal published by Penerbit UKM, either individually or in combination with other authors of the infringing manuscript, as well as in combination with any other authors. This prohibition will be imposed for a minimum of 24 months.

11.4 In addition, the publisher reserves the right to impose additional sanctions beyond those described above whenever appropriate.

 

13.0 HUMAN, ANIMAL SUBJECTS AND BIOETHICS

13.1 Works involving chemicals, procedures or equipment that have any unusual hazards inherent in their use must be clearly identified in the manuscript. The relevant ethics committee must approve the works involving experiments on live vertebrates and/or higher invertebrates. Authors must confirm that all experiments were performed in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations issued by the relevant ethics committee.

13.2 When human subjects are involved, manuscripts must be accompanied by a statement that the experiments were undertaken with the understanding and written consent of each subject. Authors should be aware of the Code of Ethics of the World Medical Association (Declaration of Helsinki), which has been published in the British Medical Journal (18 July 1964).

13.3 When experimental animals are used, the methods section must clearly indicate that adequate measures were taken to minimize pain or discomfort. Experiments should be carried out in accordance with the European Communities Council Directive of 24 November 1986 (86/609/EEC) or with the Guidelines laid down by the NIH in the US regarding the care and use of animals for experimental procedures or according to the appropriate Ethics Committee on Animal Experimentation. All studies using human or animal subjects should include an explicit statement in the Methods section identifying the review and approval committee for each study.

13.4 Editors reserved the right to reject the submitted manuscripts if there is doubt whether appropriate procedures have been taken.
